Remember Noah and the flood? That’s one Bible story the folks at South Street Church of Christ in Hastings aren’t liable to forget.
When heavy rains fill the streets around the church, Pastor Paul Julian said, “people drive by and cause a wave and flood the basement.”
Fortunately, the parishioners don’t have to wait 40 days and 40 nights for relief. A call to Christenson Cleaning and Restoration means that help is on the way.
“Every time we’ve had a problem, they’ve responded very quickly,” Pastor Paul said.

“Our goal is to be at their door within an hour when the caller states it’s an emergency and they have standing water in their home,” said Charlie Christenson, who owns Christenson Cleaning and Restoration with his father, Eric. “We can extract excess water and get the drying process started before more damage is done.”
The church has been a Christenson customer since about 2005, Pastor Paul said. He’s always been impressed by their quick response, hard work and cheerful attitude.
Once, a malfunctioning toilet flooded the church basement. The sump pump failed, leaving a foot of standing water. But Christenson got the water out and eliminated any musty odor.
“They always come in and get it done,” the pastor said.

On another occasion, he was in Phoenix when he got a call from a parishioner saying heavy rains and traffic had again flooded the basement.
“I went ahead and called Charlie, and he got on it right away,” Paul said. By the time he got back to Hastings, the Christenson crew had removed the standing water and had powerful fans working.
Charlie said calling as soon as possible means the drying process can start more quickly.
“That really makes our jobs much easier,” he said. “We run into problems typically when a homeowner tries to do it themselves, and then they start smelling a musty, wet smell, and then they call us.”
Christenson Cleaning and Restoration takes calls for water damage 24 hours a day. Steps to remediate the problem can include but aren’t limited to:
- Extracting excess water
- Applying an antimicrobial
- Removing base trim
- Drilling ventilation holes
- Setting up powerful drying equipment
- Cleaning and reconstruction if necessary
Among their specialized tools are moisture meters, fans, air scrubbers and dehumidifiers. They also have specialized training.
“We hold certifications in water damage from the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) and through the Reets Drying Academy, as well,” Charlie said. “We’re big believers in having the best schooling possible, so when you see Christenson is on the job, you know it’s going to get done right the first time.”

Charlie Christenson, Owner

Pastor Paul said Christenson Cleaning and Restoration has done a lot of work for South Street Church of Christ in his 27 years with the church.
“They always give us a good deal,” he added.
The company offers discounts to churches and nonprofits, Charlie said.
“We really like giving back to the communities that have given us so much over the years,” he said. “We also work with customers on payment plans if necessary because water damage isn’t something you can really plan to have and always have it in your budget.”
The pastor recalled working with the Christenson family when Charlie’s parents ran the business and has remained a satisfied customer as management passed to the next generation.
“It’s kind of like we’ve become a friend,” he said.
“Although we’ve grown an immense amount, customers such as Mr. Julian have continued to use us because of the great customer service we always strive to provide,” Charlie said. That includes showing up when they say they will, leaving survey cards and conducting follow-up calls to ensure everything went well. “The most important retention tool we have is great service.”
